Door marks without vanity
Brass marks that sit beside a studio door, not above it.
When I open our Woodstock atelier in the morning, the first thing my hand meets is the brass mark fixed to the wall beside our studio door. Its surface is never perfectly polished and it sits quietly, not demanding attention but offering assurance that you have come to the right place. These little plaques are more than signs, they are part of our daily ritual.
Read it alongside the Maker Mark Brass page.
Making a Mark without shouting
We chose not to put our name above the door like a shopfront. Instead, our Maker Mark Brass plaques sit to the side, at shoulder height. They are oval or rounded rectangles, never bigger than a palm, usually about 60 mm across, cut from solid brass sheet. Each is batch-made in our Woodstock workshop, then given a muted finish by hand: no high shine, just a subtle, living surface that holds the patina of the Atlantic air. The name and year are stamped in, never laser-etched, so the mark will outlast many coats of paint. Screws, never glue, hold them against painted brick, raw plaster or timber frames.
When a visitor arrives, they find the mark almost without looking, as if it belongs there. There is no need to pose or perform. This is a mark of presence, not performance.
Fitment in South African Studio conditions
Brass marks behave differently in Cape Town’s climate. The southeaster brings salt, making every exposed metal want to tarnish. We learned the hard way not to use a mirror polish. Our muted finish is achieved with a fine abrasive, then rubbed with a soft beeswax mix. That stops fingerprints and slows the green from creeping in. Each mark comes with brass screws, because other metals will leave ugly streaks as the years pass.
We have seen rushed fitments where the screws snap because the installer used a blunt driver or forced into uneven masonry. You need a sharp 2 mm bit for the pilot holes and a soft hand. When fitting to old brick, I recommend a quick test tap to check if the brick will spall. If it does, move over a few centimetres. In Joburg or Durban, humidity can speed up patina. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes not. We leave the decision to clean or leave the patina to the studio owner.
What a door Mark means to us
A door mark is not a logo for strangers. It is a sign for the people who work in the space and those invited in. In our line of work, you walk through a hundred doors every month: back entrances of bakeries, school art rooms, the side stoep to a wine cellar, the glass entry to a gallery. A small brass mark tells the story of those who make, mend and improvise within.
We have made marks for new studios, for collaborations, for editions of objects that move from studio to home. They are never mass-produced. Each one carries the date, sometimes an edition number, always our name. Some clients request a mark for their braai room or workshop. The ritual is the same: a physical, material acknowledgment of work that happens inside, without fuss.
Care, mistakes and small rituals
These little habits become part of entering and leaving the space. The mark survives paint jobs, parties, years of sun through the windows. If it ever comes off, we encourage owners to bring it back to us for a quick refresh in the workshop, or simply to hold onto it as a token. - Never use harsh chemical cleaners, only a soft cloth with a dab of beeswax or olive oil.
- Don’t over-tighten the screws, especially in soft timber doorframes.
- If the mark collects green spots after winter rain, a gentle rub with a non-scratch pad sorts it out.
- Marks fitted near the sea will develop a deeper patina, which some owners polish away and others cherish.
- Children love to trace the letters with their fingers, so expect some shine to appear over time.
Where to go next
