Zinhle Makhado

Keeping the atelier on schedule

Based in Woodstock, Cape Town, Zinhle manages the studio’s daily momentum. Her mornings begin in the main fabrication space, where she checks the team’s progress on current orders, perhaps a run of Baobab Lamp stems, Veld Tray batches for a designer, or final checks on a Karoo Screen ready for a lodge in the Karoo. Zinhle keeps workshop briefings practical and short, sorting out what needs urgent attention and pinning down delivery plans for Gauteng-bound orders or a set of Foyer Plinths heading north. She acts as the link between our floor, showrooms, and the Stellenbosch installation crew, so every piece moves forward as scheduled.

Working with clients and makers

Zinhle is known for her hands-on approach, never shying away from the details. When an architect visits to discuss a Harbour Shelf, she guides them through the different timber grains and demonstrates how our custom Maker Mark in brass is inlaid on a Studio Bench. For clients wanting a special fit, like a wine estate tweaking a Canopy Pendant for their stoep, she brings samples and works through canopy sizes and shade heights on-site until the proportions are right. Her style is practical, direct, and always focused on getting the brief right for the space.

Balancing production with creative input

Zinhle moves easily between the energetic pace of Woodstock and the feedback coming in from studios or showrooms. She tests new ideas with makers, setting up trial runs for a Studio Jig on the ceramic line or working through finish samples when a gallery asks for a subtler textile tone to suit Bloemfontein or Gqeberha light. Her input ensures each Journal Box Edition and Map Cabinet South matches the original intent, right down to the last handle or inlay.

Who typically contacts Zinhle

Clients, architects, and collaborators contact Zinhle when a project needs both decisiveness and technical know-how. She’s the go-to for special requests and for those looking to adapt a core piece, like a Baobab Lamp in an unusual timber or a Map Cabinet South with extra drawers. Logistics teams rely on her for delivery and installation questions, especially when schedule changes affect Cape Town, Joburg, Durban, or up-country installs.
