Materials assembled for lighting
The shade for the Canopy Pendant is cut from Baltic birch plywood, chosen for its light tone and consistent grain. Each piece is laser-cut in the Woodstock atelier, producing crisp, burnished edges. The brass canopy is hand-turned, then brushed for a subtle matte finish before fitting. Cord sets are sourced locally and assembled in-house to specification.
Making the Canopy Pendant in Woodstock
We start by programming the laser cutter for each order, ensuring the birch shade is dimensionally correct for the client’s table or room. After cutting, we hand-sand the edges and oil each panel, then allow them to cure for 24 hours. The brass canopy is fitted with a steel mounting plate and each pendant is test-assembled in the studio before dismantling for packing.
Quality checks include verifying the uniformity of the shade curve, testing the cable tension, and checking the brass threads. Since these are handcrafted, slight tonal differences in the birch and subtle marks from the brushing process give each piece its own character.
Variations between pendants
Because birch and brass are both organic materials, you’ll notice small variations in colour and grain that make each Canopy Pendant unique. The laser process leaves a fine dark edge on the birch, and the oil finish can deepen with time and exposure to sunlight. Brass canopies may develop a gentle patina, especially in humid or coastal locations. If you order pendants in a batch, we match finishes as closely as possible, but no two are identical.
