Plywood and Brass, handled with care
We use marine-grade birch plywood for every Harbour Shelf, chosen for its layered resilience and the way it takes oil. The brass brackets are cut and bent in our Woodstock workshop, then each corner is filed by hand. We fit every bracket to its plywood length using custom jigs, so tolerances stay tight.
Our team matches the grain direction on each span for visual continuity, and checks every board for small knots and clean edges before finishing. Brass is left uncoated to allow a natural patina to develop, reflecting use and touch over time.
Making each Shelf unique
The fabrication process begins with CNC routing to cut spans to specified lengths, then each edge is softened with a router and sanded by hand. After a dry assembly, we test bracket fit and wall clearance, then oil the plywood with a blend that protects without heavy build-up.
Quality checks catch any glue lines or sanding marks, and the shelf is test-mounted in the studio before packing. Because birch grains and brass ages differ, no two Harbour Shelves look exactly alike: small variations in hue and bracket tone are normal, especially with larger orders.

Finishing and final checks
Clear natural oil is applied in two coats, allowed to soak in fully before gentle buffing. This makes the shelf water-resistant while still allowing the timber to breathe. Before wrapping, we check bracket alignment and confirm span dimensions with a final measure. Each order leaves with a signed card from the finisher, ready for installation in its new space.
