Where Harbour Shelf belongs
Harbour Shelf finds its place in spaces that call for order without uniformity. Coastal villas lean on it for displaying beach finds, cookbooks or woven baskets above the stoep, while urban ateliers use the modular spans for reference volumes, sculpture or plant pots. It’s equally at home softening foyer walls in a guesthouse, or bringing warm timber detail to a braai room that demands more than bare plaster. We see it picked by designers outfitting wine estates and offices needing storage that doesn’t look shop-bought.
The shelf’s marine-grade plywood and brass work together for both form and function, so it’s specified by those who want their shelving to age with character, not just survive the elements. In Joburg, it anchors a reading nook; in Durban, it stands up to humidity in a creative cowork. The shelf welcomes ceramics, glass, books, and artworks, holding each item with a sense of intention.
What arrives from our atelier
Each Harbour Shelf arrives as a set: one or more spans of 220 mm deep marine plywood, finished in clear oil, with brass brackets precision-drilled to fit. Spans can be specified in lengths from 600 to 1200 mm, suiting anything from a single display ledge to a library run along a studio wall. The plywood’s edges are chamfered and the brass brackets are hand-finished to avoid sharp points.
Installation hardware is included, chosen for either brick or timber backing. Lead time is two to three weeks from confirmation. Every shelf comes with a care card suggesting regular wiping, especially if close to the sea or a kitchen.

Specifying for South African conditions
Placement matters: at the coast, the brass and marine plywood shrug off salt spray and shifting humidity. We recommend regular wiping to keep the hardware bright and the timber nourished. Inland, especially on the Highveld, the lower humidity can dry timber faster, so extra oiling may help during dry spells.
Direct sunlight on the shelf will deepen the wood’s tone over time. In the Karoo or Lowveld, dust settles quickly, so a light dry cloth is all that’s needed. Where the shelf is fitted in high-traffic areas, like school foyers or lodge mudrooms, sturdy wall fixing is a must. For deep alcoves or heavy loads, we’ll advise on bracket spacing to keep the shelf true and safe.
