A residential atelier: step by step
On the first visit, we walk the house alongside you, measuring each wall to understand the flow of your space. If the stoep doubles as your creative corner or you have a spare room in the loft, we bring our tape and sketch out the full span. Lighting is tested against evening shadows, because a home atelier needs to work after hours, not just under morning sun.
We bring sample Harbour Shelf modules for you to handle. You see how the marine-grade plywood resists Cape humidity, and how the modular system allows you to adjust for art supplies, teaching books, or just a growing vinyl collection. Placement is hands-on, with trial fits so you can feel how much elbow room you’ll have on busy evenings.
When daylight dips, we try the Baobab Lamp on your intended worktable or reading nook. The turned base stays put, and the laser-cut shade throws a gentle silhouette, letting you check if the light is soft enough for late drawing or admin but still bright enough to keep the mood calm. The Studio Bench is rolled in last, so you can test sitting and working, or pulling it up to the braai room when friends arrive. Only once you’ve lived with these pieces for a day or two do we finalise shelf placements.
Checklist for a home Studio that works evenings
Every residential atelier needs a solid plan. Here’s what we make sure happens at each step:
- Measure wall lengths and check plug point positions before shelf and lamp selection.
- Test shelf module height and depth with your actual books, art materials or vinyls.
- Trial Baobab Lamp position at your usual evening work hour.
- Confirm bench fits under the shelf or window when not in use.
- Double-check that walking paths stay clear and safe, even with kids or pets in the house.
Where home ateliers can go wrong and how we catch it
Sometimes a beautiful shelf lands up blocking a much-used plug, or a lamp sits where the evening light is swallowed by a heavy Highveld curtain. We’ve seen benches picked too wide, bumping into a stoep door, or shelves fixed too high for little ones to reach their art packs.
To catch these snags early, we insist on mapping wall spans and checking plug points ourselves, not just guessing from plans or phone photos. We always bring a sample shelf module and bench for real-life placement, not just tape on the floor. Lighting is tested at the time of day you’ll use it most, not at mid-morning when everything looks bright.
If something still feels off, we’re back for a quick revisit before anything is fixed or drilled. It keeps your home atelier handy and harmonious. For any tricky corners or special requests, just email atelier@creationafrica.co.za and we’ll sort it together.
