Where Baobab Lamp finds a home

The Baobab Lamp is a popular choice for lodge foyers, gallery seating zones, boutique hotel lounges and homes where a softer, diffused light is called for. Interior architects and residential clients often specify it for entrance halls, reading corners and even tucked into the stoep, where harsh bulbs would be too glaring. We’ve seen it selected for cowork reception areas as well, adding warmth to spaces that need to feel both welcoming and calm.

Its scale suits both compact and generous rooms, standing 480 mm tall and just right for side tables or credenzas. The lamp’s silhouette echoes the branching spread of its namesake tree, giving it subtle presence in both contemporary and classic decor schemes.

What arrives with your Lamp

The Baobab Lamp comes fully assembled, ready to plug in. You receive a weighty turned hardwood base, which gives stability, and a laser-cut birch canopy shade that casts gentle, patterned light. The lamp takes a standard E27 bulb, making it easy to tailor the ambience with your preferred wattage or colour temperature.

Each lamp is finished by hand in our Woodstock atelier, then checked for fit and finish before packing. Dusting with a soft cloth keeps the birch shade and timber base looking their best. Lead time is three to four weeks from order to dispatch, allowing for careful shaping, assembly and drying of finishes.

  • Turned hardwood, laser birch

South African conditions influence detail

Cape humidity and coastal air can affect both timber and birch over time, so we treat the wood to withstand the southeaster and summer damp. Upcountry interiors, especially in the Highveld, are drier, and for those we advise a slightly different finish to protect against cracking from sharp temperature swings.

In high-traffic foyers or schools, we recommend specifying a deeper, oiled timber base that resists scuffs. For bushveld or Lowveld lodges, the lamp’s enclosed shade helps keep dust out of the bulb cavity. Sun-flooded rooms may call for a paler birch that won’t yellow, or for the lamp to be placed away from direct glass. Should you have unique site conditions, let us know when ordering so we can tailor the finish accordingly.
