Where Journal Box Edition finds its place
Journal Box Edition is called for when you need to transport or present important atelier publications without risking a crease or torn corner. Often ordered by curators, gallery staff, and those running press launches, this box keeps ledgers in perfect order from the main Woodstock workshop to showrooms in Joburg, Durban, or the Cape. It sits comfortably in a reception nook, gallery shelf, or a private study, anywhere precious print needs dignified protection.
You might see one on a stoep table at a Highveld wine estate, or under a counter in a Rosebank pop-up, with each copy nestled safely inside. Museum teams and editorial contributors often use them for carrying fragile or limited edition issues to and from events. The neat brass latch keeps contents secure in bakkie rides across the Karoo or even during a quick jaunt through the city by bicycle courier.

What arrives with your Box
When your Journal Box Edition arrives, you’ll find a robust plywood body finished with a smooth, clear lacquer to keep the grain visible and practical. Inside, a soft foam nest cradles papers up to A4. The box is fitted with a substantial brass latch, designed for years of opening and closing without warping. Each piece in the run is individually numbered on a small inside label.
External dimensions are 35 cm wide, 26 cm deep, and 9 cm high, making it portable yet roomy enough for several journal issues, exhibition flyers, or press drop materials. The box is surprisingly light, so it won’t slow you down whether you’re hopping between venues or moving materials upstairs.
We recommend a dry cloth for wiping, as the finish shrugs off most spills but is not intended for wet cleaning. Allow roughly three weeks from confirmation to completion, with each order handled directly by the Woodstock team.
Fitting South African conditions
The Journal Box Edition is made for our local variety: from the humid air of Durban to the windy, salt-laden Cape. Plywood is chosen for its resistance to warping compared to solid timber, and the lacquer finish helps it stand up to a bit of coastal air. Still, we advise keeping it out of direct sun, especially in Joburg or the Lowveld, to avoid bleaching or softening of the foam nest.
If your box will travel dusty farm roads or be handled by many hands during a press drop, the latch is robust enough to keep everything tight, but it’s best to check the catch for grit every now and then. In high-humidity months, the foam nest might feel softer, but it always holds form.
For spaces with heavy service traffic, like hotel foyers or gallery shops, consider asking us about a reinforced option. If your box will be on display, wiping it weekly will keep both brass and ply looking smart.
