Materials and making in Woodstock

We start each Journal Box Edition with lightweight yet sturdy birch plywood, hand-selected in the workshop for consistent grain and minimal knots. The brass latch is fitted after machining the box, giving a satisfying, solid snap when closed. The foam nest is cut precisely to size, ensuring journals won’t rattle or shift, even if the box is jostled on a long drive.

The fabrication sequence is straightforward but careful: sheets are cut and edges routered, then assembled by hand with hidden joinery. After a dry fit, the box is sanded and treated with two coats of matte lacquer to give a tactile, durable surface.

  • Hand-selected birch ply
  • Brass latch installation
  • Precisely cut foam nest

Finishing touches and variations

Each Journal Box Edition is checked for clean closure, snug fit of the foam, and a flush latch. The boxes are numbered individually before leaving the studio, with a quick brass polish to remove any workshop fingerprints. No two boxes show the same grain pattern or exactly the same ply edge, so there’s always a subtle distinction between editions.

If there’s a need for a specific lining cut to match unusual print sizes, or you’d like the brass latch left to patinate naturally instead of being polished, let us know early in the order process. We can also deepen the foam nest or add a felt lining by arrangement.
