Purpose-built for route keepers and map lovers

Map Cabinet South finds its home in studios where maps, blueprints and journey notes need to stay flat and ready for reference. It has become a familiar presence in spaces welcoming travelling collaborators, architects, art teachers and anyone planning routes across the southern continent. You’ll often spot it in gallery back rooms, lodge receptions, university departments, as well as in individual makers’ workrooms. Its dimensions keep it discreet yet accessible, slotting in against a wall or under a shared counter where colleagues can gather round the glass top to plot their next move.

What’s in the delivery

Each cabinet measures 1,200 mm wide, 800 mm deep and 850 mm high, with four shallow drawers perfect for A1 and A0 paper, linen plans or large site maps. The 8 mm tempered glass top lets you view current layouts without having to open a drawer, while a plywood body ensures longevity and lightness. Brass pulls add a tactile gleam and stand up to years of daily use. Our workshop’s finish is a durable, water-based, semi-matte sealant that’s easy to keep clean. Lead time from order to completion is usually four weeks. For ongoing care, a weekly wipe with a damp cloth is enough to keep the cabinet looking sharp.

Responds to the South African climate

Map Cabinet South is built for the realities of local conditions, whether it’s the dampness of the Cape winter, the dry dust of the Karoo or the sticky air of Durban. For coastal locations we use marine-grade plywood and double-seal all joints to prevent swelling. In Joburg and Pretoria, highveld dust and sunshine can be harsh, so the glass top receives extra UV treatment, and we recommend keeping cabinets away from direct window glare to preserve paper contents. In areas with heavy workshop or foot traffic, brass pulls are fixed with reinforced screws, and runners are chosen for easy gliding even with regular opening and closing. If you have a space open to the stoep or in a high-humidity zone, tell us before we start the build so we can make the necessary tweaks.

  • Marine ply for coastal installs
  • Extra UV glass for inland sun
  • Reinforced hardware for busy venues
