Plywood and brass, assembled by our Cape team
Every Map Cabinet South starts with carefully sourced plywood, cut to size and sanded by hand in our Woodstock atelier. The four shallow drawers are routed for precise alignment and a smooth slide. Brass pulls are custom spun and hand-fitted, while the glass top is precision-cut and toughened by a local glassworks. Our team dry-assembles each piece before final joinery to guarantee that everything lines up once the cabinet is delivered.
Finishing for accuracy and longevity
Once assembled, the plywood body receives two coats of water-based sealant and a final hand sand to a semi-matte sheen. Drawer runners are tested for ease and strength, and every brass pull is checked for secure fit. The glass top is laid into a rebated frame so there’s no chance of sliding or rattle. Before leaving the studio, each cabinet is inspected for sharp edges, smooth movement and a flawless finish. As every batch of ply takes stain a little differently, subtle shifts in colour and grain from piece to piece are part of the story.
Custom tweaks for unique spaces
We sometimes adjust drawer depths or body height to fit a customer’s existing counter or odd-sized maps. One-off requests for darker stains, alternative pull shapes or engraved brass labels are welcome with a little extra notice. Let us know if your cabinet will face heavy wear, as we can reinforce runners and select even tougher finishes for hospitality or school settings.
