Edition boxes that protect

Foam nests and brass latches for ledger press drops.

At our Stellenbosch install base, I see firsthand how much trouble can come from moving art and journals around the country. The Journal Box Edition is our answer to keeping ledger press drops and collectable issues as fresh as the day they left Woodstock, through all the real-world bumps and jolts.

Material matters: inside and out

The first question we get about the Journal Box Edition is usually about what it’s made of. For the body, we've chosen plywood, not just for its classic look, but because it can handle Joburg’s dry winters and Durban humidity without warping. We've tested cheaper board, but it always ended up swelling or splitting after a few months, especially on the Highveld. The edges get a hand-sanded finish, which means no nasty splinters when you’re unpacking a delivery in a conference room or gallery foyer.

Securing the lid is a solid brass latch, the sort you can open with cold or sweaty hands. Brass stands up to sea air from the Cape southeaster and never leaves streaks or stains on your hands or the box’s surface. These little details matter when you have to install a set in a wine estate’s library or a school’s entrance, where everything is on show.

Packing for a long journey

A common mistake we see is underestimating what happens inside a bakkie on a gravel road. It’s not just about a hard shell. The true protection is inside, where each box is fitted with a soft foam nest. This cradle is precision-cut for our ledger editions, so nothing slides or rattles, not even on the last stretch to a lodge in the Karoo.

We’ve tried felt and even rubber mats, but foam is the only material that springs back after a knock and doesn’t trap dust or sand. If you’re ever packing the box yourself, make sure the edition slots straight into the nest. Don’t force it, a tight fit can dent corners, and a loose fit lets things shift in transit.

Real-world mishaps and lessons learnt

Not every delivery goes how you plan. Early on, we sent a batch without the foam fitted, just wrapped in tissue paper. The road from Cape Town to Upington is long, and by the time the boxes arrived, the journals inside had all their corners crushed. Now, every box is hand-checked in Woodstock: foam fitted, latch tested, and the box numbered by edition. I remember a job in Brooklyn where someone left a box out overnight after cleaning, and a sudden morning drizzle soaked the plywood. Since then, we always advise: wipe dry after spills and never store near damp walls.

We’ve seen brass latches fixed too tight so they snap after a few weeks, or boxes sealed in plastic overnight that end up with condensation. The fix is simple: always transport with air able to circulate, especially if you’re going from the coast to the Highveld.

  • Check the foam nest fits your edition before closing the lid.
  • Keep the box dry and out of direct sun.
  • Test the brass latch gently before every trip.
  • Let the box air out overnight if it’s been in a humid van.

Care, storage, and passing on

Once the box is in your hands, keeping it in condition is easy. Wipe dry with a soft cloth, especially if you’ve had it on the stoep or carried it in mist. If you’re installing in a braai room or wine cellar, we suggest raising it off the floor on a wooden block, just in case of spills or damp. The number on the inside lip matches it to its press drop, which helps for records and insurance.

Our Journal Box Edition isn’t just a piece of packaging, it’s meant to carry stories from one place to another, safe from bumps, drips, and South African roads. For any install or care query, you can always reach us on atelier@creationafrica.co.za. Each box tells a journey, and we build them to last the distance.
