Foyer lamp briefs

What to write before you commission a turned base lamp.

I see a surprising number of vague lamp requests arrive at our studios, especially when it comes to foyer spaces. As the studios editor, it is clear to me that a good lamp brief saves time, money and confusion for everyone, especially when the base is turned hardwood, like in our Baobab Lamp.

Read it alongside the Baobab Lamp page.

Start with your foyer's real story

Every foyer in South Africa is different, whether it is a city block in Joburg or a breezy Cape stoep. Write down three things that happen at your entrance: who waits there, what do they carry, and at what times of day does light matter most? Is the lamp meant to greet guests coming in from the Highveld dusk or help someone find their keys during a summer storm? For example, a Baobab Lamp in a lodge foyer often needs to produce a soft, contained pool of light to calm arrivals straight off the bakkie after a long drive. These details anchor your brief in daily life, not just style.

Material decisions: wood, shade and care

A turned hardwood base, like the one on the Baobab Lamp, is both sturdy and a pleasure to the touch. In humid Durban, we recommend hardwoods that handle moisture without warping, such as kiaat or oak, and always specify if the foyer faces the sun or is close to an exterior door. The shade matters too: laser-cut birch is durable but needs to be kept dry and dusted with a soft cloth, never a wet rag. The E27 fitting is standard here, but do mention if your foyer wiring is non-standard, so we can adjust safely during fabrication. These points ensure the lamp is both beautiful and practical for your space.

  • Confirm the species of hardwood if you have a favourite, or let us suggest based on your local climate.
  • Note the shade's orientation: a wider birch shade spreads light further, a smaller one keeps things intimate.
  • State if your foyer has cross-breezes, pets, or young children, which may affect finish choices.

How to write Lamp height and size

We often receive requests for 'medium' or 'statement' lamps, but dimensions are much more useful to our workshop. The Baobab Lamp stands at 480 mm, a good height for a standard foyer console, but if your table is unusually high or low, specify the total desired lamp height, including the shade. Measure from the floor to the top of the surface where the lamp will stand, then decide how much higher the lamp should reach. Take a photo of the spot with a measuring tape for reference, especially if the foyer is narrow or the ceiling is low. These small details help us turn a drawing into a finished object that feels right at home.

What not to leave out of the brief

Certain details are easy to forget but essential. Always mention if your foyer is on a generator circuit or prone to voltage dip, which might affect bulb choice. If you need a lead time under three weeks, say so from the outset: our usual window for a Baobab Lamp is three to four weeks, as each base is turned by hand in Woodstock. Installation is rarely needed for a table lamp, but do mention if you require a longer cord or a specific plug. Finally, write down your preferred finish, natural oil, dark stain, or painted, and let us know how much maintenance you can commit to.
