Pendant drops that fit

Measuring tasting tables before a canopy pendant hangs.

There is a certain rhythm to mounting pendant lights over a tasting table, especially when you are working out the right drop for each space. As the fabrication lead here in Woodstock, I have seen how small measuring mishaps can make a big difference between a pendant that feels made for the room and one that looks out of place.

Read it alongside the Canopy Pendant page.

Choosing the right drop for the table

When we begin with a new Canopy Pendant, the first job is always to measure the tasting table properly. A wine estate’s table is never just a table: it is the meeting point of glasses, bottles, elbows and conversations. The pendant’s drop has to let the light reach the surface, but not get in the way of anyone’s eye-line or a server’s easy reach. I always bring a steel tape, not a laser measurer, because tasting rooms often have irregular stone floors or thick carpets that throw off digital readings.

We note the table length and width, but also the height from the top of the table to the ceiling. South African spaces can surprise you, from the old Karoo farmhouses with their beams, to the Lowveld’s newer open-plan wine rooms. For the Canopy Pendant, we find that a drop length of 650 to 900 millimetres from the ceiling to the base of the birch laser shade works for most tasting tables. Anything lower and you risk bumping heads, especially after the second tasting flight.

Materials under South African light

The Canopy Pendant brings together a birch laser-cut shade with a solid brass canopy. We always check for direct sunlight in the tasting area. Birch holds its colour well but can fade over time if it sits under a glass roof or broad skylight, especially in the harsher Highveld sun. Brass can tarnish in the Durban humidity unless it is waxed or left to develop a patina, depending on the owner’s taste.

In Cape Town’s southeaster, dust can blow in even with the doors closed. We advise owners to dust the pendant gently every week, especially above the shade where it tends to collect. Cleaning inside the shade takes a short handled brush, the sort you use for biltong crumbs. No sprays or polish needed, just keep it dry.

Mistakes we have seen, and how to avoid them

A pendant that is too high leaves the table in half-shadow, and one that hangs too low becomes a hazard. Over the years, I have seen a few common pitfalls:

  • Rushing the measure and not accounting for a thick table top, which can be another 60mm lost.
  • Forgetting to check if the canopy will clear overhead beams or a concealed aircon duct, leading to last-minute drill holes in the wrong spot.
  • Not allowing enough play in the cable for uneven ceilings, particularly in older Cape cottages with a stoep.
  • Installing before the tasting table is on site, only to find the table is a different shape or size than planned.
  • Assuming E27 bulbs will always fit, some local brands are too long and poke below the birch shade.

Fitting and final touches

Our team always does a dry run with the canopy and shade in the workshop before heading out. The brass canopy plates are checked for any marks or scratches, and we test the E27 lamp fitting with both warm and cool bulbs to show the client the colour wash on their actual table wood. We always bring a bakkie stocked with extra cable and a sharp drill bit, because you never know when a hard knot in a beam will slow things down.

Once on site, we walk the room again and check where people will stand or sit. At wine estates, the morning and afternoon sun can shift dramatically, so it is worth turning the pendant on and off at different times to see where the shadows fall. After the final fix, we leave a note for care: dust regularly and avoid heavy pulls on the cable. For custom drops, if there is any doubt, we invite the owner to email atelier@creationafrica.co.za and we will adjust on site. Every pendant should fit the table, the room and the way people move through both.
