Material and motif
At the heart of the Karoo Screen is a plywood core, selected for its resilience and even grain. This is paired with dense acoustic felt in a neutral tone that softens both sound and appearance. The Karoo motif is plotted and laser-cut, giving sharp edges and clean repetition. Each opening references the shape of hardy Karoo plants, spaced for partial transparency. Brass tips are machined and fitted to the feet, providing durability and a glint of warmth at ground level.
Workshop sequence
Every screen starts its life as a full board in our Woodstock atelier. Panels are cut to size, then moved to the CNC for motif perforation. Edges are hand-sanded for a smooth, touch-friendly finish. Acoustic felt is bonded on the reverse and pressed to ensure no puckering. The feet are assembled separately: timber, then brass tips, checked for fit. Once assembled, each piece stands for a day in our studio to monitor joint movement and felt adhesion. Only after passing a hands-on inspection for stability and finish do we wrap it for delivery.
Character in the details
No two pieces are identical. Natural wood grain in the plywood shifts from panel to panel, and the felt shade varies slightly between batches. Brass tips develop a gentle patina if left unpolished, especially in coastal air. Custom requests, like alternate felt colours or heavier bases for public spaces, are possible if arranged before production starts. We value the hand-touched quality that comes from working in small batches, so each Karoo Screen carries the subtle hallmarks of the studio.
