Hardwood, steel and Brass in the workshop
Every Studio Bench begins with careful hardwood selection. We favour local timbers with close, steady grain, sourced from sawmills familiar with inland and coastal movement. The bench top is planed, edged, and sanded in our Woodstock atelier, then fitted to a steel base fabricated and welded on site. The steel is locally coated to resist scuffs and moisture. The brass peg rail is tapped and installed by hand, a small but essential detail for keeping tools within reach.
From Bench build to finishing touches
Once assembled, each bench is hand-oiled and left to cure in our finishing room. This brings out the timber’s depth and armours it for daily use. Our team checks every joint and weld before signing off. No two benches age exactly the same: knots, grain swirls and the tone of the hardwood vary naturally, so each piece wears its own story. If your order calls for tweaks, a longer bench for a team, or extra rails, we fabricate to spec, but always keep the material character front and centre.
Quality checks and Studio variations
Before a bench leaves Woodstock, it passes a last fit check: the base must sit square, the rail run smooth, and the top feel solid under weight. We sometimes get requests to match timber tone or powder coat colour to existing pieces, that’s possible, but each batch remains unique. Some benches will grow honeyed with sun, others keep their deep tone in a cool Karoo classroom.
