From SA hardwood to stacked form

We start with locally sourced hardwood, kiln-dried to the right moisture for South African conditions. The blanks are mapped and loaded onto our CNC in Woodstock, where each tray is shaped to tight tolerances. This method gives a consistent lip and allows for the stackable edge that makes the Veld Tray so useful in multiples.

After machining, we hand sand every surface and radius the corners so there’s no bite or splinter, even on the most tactile edge.

Brass inlay and final finish

The muted brass lines are inlaid by hand, pressed into routed grooves, then planed and burnished flush. We keep the brass understated, neither too yellow nor polished, so it sits quietly against the timber rather than shouting. Once the inlay is set, we oil the tray in several coats of food-safe matte oil, letting it cure between layers to seal and deepen the grain.

Before sign-off, each tray is checked for flatness and the inlay’s finish. If we see any movement in the timber over a few days, we rework it before packing. The final result is never identical: there will always be subtle shifts in grain and brass, which is part of the appeal.
