Visiting the estate: sequence for tasting room works

On our first morning at a wine estate, we start by walking the tasting room and cellar with the estate team. We mark the flow from foyer to tasting counter, noting where guests gather, where glasses cluster, and how sunlight shifts across the room as the day changes. Our team sketches the tasting tables on site, measuring lengths and widths to the nearest centimetre, and plotting pendant locations above each table. We bring samples of our Veld Tray, placing it on the actual table to check reach and fit. For the Canopy Pendant, we hold a template at different heights, weighing the drop by eye and tape, ensuring bottles and arms have safe clearance.

By day two, with the drop heights agreed, we send a fitter to install the pendant canopy. The laser-cut brass is unwrapped and handed over with gloves, and the fixing points are checked one by one against our initial plan. We keep a bakkie running outside for any last-minute fetches should we need a spare fitting. Meanwhile, we meet the cellar manager at the main door. Using a soft mallet and block, we stamp a Maker Mark Brass plate beside the entry to the barrel room, marking the project as a Creation Africa edition.

Estate readiness: our fitting checklist

When working in a tasting room, even small shifts can create a knock-on. We use a checklist for each step, cross-checking with the estate team before moving on:

  • Confirm exact placement and drop height for each Canopy Pendant above tasting tables.
  • Test every Veld Tray on the actual estate tables to ensure stable fit without wobble.
  • Check power availability and switch positions for pendant lighting before installation.
  • Mark the correct door with estate management for Maker Mark Brass stamping, avoiding heritage panels.
  • Photograph every finished fitting for estate records before leaving the site.

Common pitfalls and how we avoid them

Wine estates have their own quirks, from uneven floors to century-old barrel doors. The most common trip-up is pendants hung at the wrong level, either blocking views of the vineyards or getting in the way during service. We bring adjustable mock-ups and never drill a thing until we’ve checked sightlines from every guest seat. Another snag is trays that rock due to old tables with bowed planks. To catch this, we trial each Veld Tray on the oldest table first, sanding edges on the spot if needed.

On the branding side, estate owners sometimes want the Maker Mark Brass plate front and centre, but later regret marking original doors. We talk this through on site, offering to mount on a nearby wall or new panel if there’s any doubt. By working alongside the estate team and staying honest about what works on their patch, we keep the craft spirit strong and avoid overdone, hotel-style finishes.
