Hardwood selection and preparation
We start by selecting clear, stable hardwood, often ash, oak or kiaat depending on the client’s preference and regional match. Each board is jointed and planed in our Woodstock workshop, then edge-glued for maximum stability. We orient the grain for visual calm and balanced weight. Only the best pieces of timber are reserved for this object, since face grain and endgrain are both on display.
Building, brasswork and fine finishing
Once the block is formed, the edges are eased by hand for a quiet, soft outline. The brass foot is cut and polished to fit flush, then secured with concealed fixings. Each face is sanded through four grades, then wiped down before oiling. We use a hardwax oil that brings out warmth in the wood and resists fingerprints. A final inspection checks for surface perfection, no glue lines or sharp corners.

Each Plinth unique to site
As every log of wood is different, each Foyer Plinth carries its own character. Grain patterns, subtle knots, and tone shifts give each a distinct look. The brass foot’s patina may deepen over time, especially in humid or sea air. Some pieces have a straighter edge, others take a slightly softer corner, this is part of the atelier’s hand-finished nature.
